Sounds Write

At White Gum Valley Primary School, our goal is to provide every student with foundational literacy skills that will serve them throughout their lives as lifelong learners.

We are proud to have introduced the Sounds Write program to our Year 3-6 students in 2023, as part of our suite of literacy interventions. This program runs for 50 minutes each Monday and Wednesday, with Mrs Kitson and Ms Maz.

Sounds Write is a high-quality, highly structured, systematic synthetic phonics program. It is based on the science of reading and is endorsed by the Department of Education (DoE) in Western Australia.

The Sounds Write program is a research-based method for building students’ phonics knowledge – that is, their ability to recognise and use the sounds that make up words. Through a series of engaging activities and games, students are taught the key skills required to be effective and confident readers and spellers.

To ensure that every student receives the support they need, the Sounds Write program runs in addition to regular classroom literacy instruction.
