Talk 4 Writing

Talk 4 Writing (T4W) is an intuitive and oral-language based writing program used from Pre-Primary up to Year 6. The program is based around a three-stage structure of imitation, innovation and then independent application. The oral and visual aspect of the program allows for all access for students that require differentiated instruction or communicate their understanding in alternative ways.

Imitation: During the first stage, students learn an exemplar version of the text type that is the particular focus, called the model text. This involves identifying key features, vocabulary, and techniques that can be used when students create their own text later in the unit. The exemplar text can be memorised, represented by a visual code, or in the upper years, analysed for its content.

Innovation: During the second stage, students are guided to create their own version of the text type. Students use a ‘boxed-up’ planner using the structure and conventions identified in the first stage. In the lower years, students ‘hug’ the model text and only make small modifications (for example: instead of the gingerbread man, it might be the meringue man with a very similar plot). This approach allows for guided written instruction on how to master the technical side of writing at a sentence-level, with a focus on grammar skills.

Independent/Invention: In the final stage, students are given the opportunity to invent an entirely new text of their own. They apply the techniques they have been practising throughout the unit to their own version. This stage allows for self and peer editing sessions, as well as targeted feedback from teachers to ‘bump up’ their writing.
